What We Do
Pickwick is a community print studio located in the SPACE Studios building at 536 Congress Street: a hub for professional artists in southern Maine.
We are a group of printmakers that share space and equipment to make our work, educate and activate our communities, and serve as a platform for our members to become or continue professional careers as artists.
So what do you actually do?
We have presses, tools and equipment for intaglio, relief, letterpress, screenprinting, risography, and offset lithography printmaking. We provide a practical physical space that serves artists’ needs as makers. By sharing the burden of equipment costs and studio rental fees, our artists can focus their resources on their work.
We also facilitate workshops, commission print work, sell our own work, and organize public events.
Why do you do it?
Printmaking can be a mysterious art ("why do they make so many of the same thing?") but we’re here to demystify it for you. We are makers of multiples who use sometimes complex processes to create beautiful editions of prints to be enjoyed by many.
Our mission is to create energy around the process of printmaking for both the art community and the greater community of Portland, Maine, and beyond.
Mostly: PRINTMAKING IS AMAZING. We love and believe in the power of print.
we love you & we are not a copy shop!
But we do love copy shops and appreciate their work! We’re just a little more analog.
